Livesey's Factory

Vale House Farm is shown here in the foreground. Livesey's factory is further along the road, in the centre of the photograph. This factory manufactured shuttles for the cotton industry and was known as "the Shuttle Shop"! See also the postings on Higher and Lower Mills.

More about the author

I was born in 1963, at the Tower Lodge, Hoghton. After studying modern languages, I left to study in France in 1983 and finally settled there, in Haute Loire, marrying a French national. This blog started as a nostalgic pastime and experiment to create a website in 2011.

I lived in the Rhone-Alpes region for 30 years, in Saint Etienne (42 Loire), Clermont Ferrand (63 Puy de Dôme), Bourg-en-Bresse, Hauteville-Lompnes (01 Ain). I returned to the UK in 2013 for seven years where I worked as a public service French interpreter/translator and presently live, once again, near Bourg-en-Bresse. I am passionate about local history and have continued with the blog over the years. I would like to share a few memories with you of days gone by in my native village....

"Memories of Hoghton", as you will see, is an amalgam of old postcards, press clippings, documents and personal family photos, mainly donated by my uncle, Herbert Miller-Crook. He was born in 1925 and has always documented the family history in Hoghton, from its earliest days known to us, at the Boatyard, Riley Green to Crook Brothers, ex-MOD vehicles, created in the late 50's.

Photos date from the 1880's to present day.

I aim to show the village as older members of my family remember it, and how it was when I was a young girl...
